Ohio Music Award winning multi-instrumentalist & singer/songwriter
Chuck Oney started his musical career as a drummer. But when he was asked to sing for a band, that changed his whole career. He followed it up in the early 80’s singing in High School bands that featured Jeff Boggs (Hydrogyn) & Zoltan Chaney (Vince Neil Band & Slaughter). After joining 2 national touring cover bands, Chuck decided he wanted to please crowds on his own merit with his own original songs. So he formed ONEY in (1987-1992). ONEY was a glam metal band that were known for live energetic shows as well as their rocking sound that was compared to Cheap Trick, KISS, Bon Jovi, Poison & Lillian Axe. ONEY & 4Play Records release the EP “Good Guys Wear Black” in 1989 that would later be re-released in 2005 by 80’s imprint label Retrospect Records. Retrospect also released in 2006 a long overdue album by ONEY that was recorded in 1991-1992 called “Bust Em Down”. Though ONEY featured several members over the years like Trace Ritter on guitar (ChalkFarm) & Jerry Lawson (Hydrogyn) on drums, the core lineup consisted of Mickey Daniels (Guitar& Keys), Kym Koster (Bass), Scott Carr (Guitar) & Kyle Virgin (Drums).
ONEY disbanded in July 1992 & in Oct 1993 Chuck & Scott went about forming a new band with Chuck on Rythmn Guitar & Vocals, called The Vague.
The Vague formed in late 1993, were known for their Power Pop, melodic songs with a driven edge and tight harmonies. They were compared to Cheap Trick, Badfinger, Elvis Costello, & The Posies. They shared the stages with Ace Frehley (KISS), Enuff Z’Nuff, Bulletboys, John Corabi (Motley Crue) Pat DiNizio (The Smithereens) & Mike Tramp (White Lion). They released an indie album on GBS records called “Divorcing the Shame” in 2002 as well as appearing on numerous compilations & tribute records. They spent 5 years recording, what would ultimately undo the band, their Magnus opus called “Fussy”.
In summer 2013 saw the demise of The Vague.
Chuck decided to go solo and recorded the ep “Shimmering Hearts” which featured the opening track “Dear Miss Roberts” that won an Ohio Music Award for “Best Rock Song” of 2015. Also in 2015 Chuck won 2 Ohio Valley Chapters 2014 television Emmy’s for his work behind the scenes in television at WOSU.
